Beatbullying works consistently with children and young people with special educational needs; in fact, they form 9% of the young people we work with. They are an integral part of regular workshops and panels and we offer access to a number of our programmes from music to team sports within our generic awareness raising programmes of work. However, as part of our extended mentoring provision within BBSchools, we can also offer a specifically adapted programme called “Shout Out” in Special Schools for children and young people with mild to moderate learning difficulties
Shout Out, BB Peer Mentoring in Special/SEN schools focuses on staying safe, understanding friendships, the difference between positive and negative friendships, what bullying is, how they may be bullied and how they may deliberately or unwittingly bully their peers or other children or young people. It also focuses on Shouting Out if they or their friends are in trouble, or are being bullied, are frightened or lonely or just feeling unhappy. Our highly interactive workshops use design, drama, photography, music and play to engage young people with learning difficulties.
The young people are then taught and trained to be ‘Shouters’ - this is a fun (and yes, very noisy) way for teaching the children and young people the skills they need to act as mentors. They also work with BB facilitators who will help them build anti-bullying policies / charters for their school and output that is new media and music based as part of this creative expression and response to bullying.
BB has a dedicated SEN officer and if you work within an SEN school or provide additional support and activities for children and young people with special educational needs and want to get involved, then give us a call on 020 8771 3377 or email us at info@beatbullying.org.
