Funded by Comic Relief, Beatbullying has been delivering the Streetwise Project across London. Beatbullying’s highly successful bullying prevention model has been merged with a marginally different social outcome/issue i.e. grooming. To provide an intervention model which utilises our expertise in engaging and empowering young people increasing their knowledge and awareness of sexual bullying and the negative impact on young lives that revolve around unhealthy relationships.
Streetwise is an awareness raising and primary prevention strategy aimed at children and young people aged between 12 and 18, and their advocates/supporters including teachers, youth workers and other professionals. Using schools, community groups and youth clubs the programme will educate young people around the issues, causes and risks relating to peer to peer grooming, sexual bullying and unhealthy relationships. An engaging and challenging project, Streetwise deals with very difficult and contemporary personal safety and awareness issues head on.
Streetwise recently rolled out in Croydon, the results of which can be viewed online at www.bbclic.com/streetwise. Young People in Croydon have taken a bold and brave step to assist and support their peers. Everything from slang, stereotypes, staying safe offline and online and building an emotional and also physical resilience in very challenging times. We are currently facilitating Streetwise in Barking and Dagenham, Camden and Merton. Partnership building is now taking place in Bexley and Southwark.
If you are a school or youth and community group working with young people between the ages of 12 – 18 in any of these boroughs and would like to be involved in our Streetwise project give the Beatbullying Development team a call on 020 8771 3377 or email us at info@beatbullying.org and a member of the team will be happy to help.
