Frequently asked questions

Q When was Beatbullying founded?

A 1999

Q What does Beatbullying do?

A Beatbullying is the UK’s leading bullying prevention charity. Beatbullying empowers young people to lead anti-bullying campaigns in their schools and local communities, and builds the capacity of local communities to sustain the work.

Focusing on ‘peer to peer’ education, Beatbullying empowers young people to take responsibility for, and action against, incidents of bullying and help others combat the problem, using anti-bullying strategies devised by young people for young people. We strongly believe that young people have the ability to shape society - a society in which bullying is unacceptable.

We provide bullying prevention workshops and on the ground anti-bullying support for schools, youth groups and communities all across the UK.

Q Does Beatbullying’s approach work?

A When Beatbullying intervenes, our independently proven prevention model will reduce incidents of bullying by an average of 39% in UK schools, and by up to 80% in our most successful schools.  In addition to this, reporting of bullying and of child on child violence goes up by 60% as young people feel more able to seek help.

Q What is the most effective way to tackle bullying?

A Prevention is better than intervention. The introduction of progressive bullying prevention programmes in the UK will reduce bullying, reduce truancy levels, increase attainment and reduce the incidents of racist and homophobic violence and abuse in our schools.

We must also engage with young people and to listen to their opinions on the problem.  Beatbullying’s prevention strategies are developed for young people by young people. By raising awareness of the problem and educating young people with the skills to tackle it themselves, Beatbullying helps to develop emotionally resilient young people who will then be skilled enough to cascade their learning through their peer groups and communities. By taking responsibility for bullying, young people can prevent it from happening in the first place.
