“You’re looking at teenagers but some primary school children are carrying knives and guns, where are for protection against older children” said an 11 year old boy from a north London school, who is also a member of the Youth Council.
The claim was made at a youth council meeting of representatives from Haringey schools last week.
On speaking about solutions to knife crime, Ex Det-Supt Alan Mains stated that education is the key to curbing the growing problem. “Lessons on danger of carrying knives need to be compulsory for every pupil from 11 years old”
This echoes Beatbullying’s campaign to introduce anti-violence, conflict resolution and bullying prevention programmes into UK schools to reduce the levels of bullying, truancy, knife crime, and incidents of racist and homophobic violence, while also increasing attainment in the classroom.
This campaign aimed at the Government, will cost just £4 per child per year to put these schemes into every school in the country.
We work directly with young people, in schools, youth groups and communities, to reduce, resolve and prevent conflict in a non-violent manner. Young people hold the key to solving the problem, but we also work with the whole community, including parents, teachers and adult role models, because we know that everyone has a part to play if we are to educate young people on the importance of resolving conflict without violence.
