Effective evaluation and monitoring of Beatbullying's work is absolutely crucial to the heart of what we do as a charity. What good is great delivery to our young users and those that access our professional services unless it is proven?
Beatbullying monitors the feedback of our service users with a view of improving the delivery and results of our proven prevention programmes. Beatbullying’s evaluation adopts an intermediate philosophical position to understand the origins of young people’s knowledge and experience. This is closely aligned to the epistemological and ontological assumptions made prior to our research and evaluation.
A combination of both quantitative and qualitative approaches are employed to promote flexibility. By doing this we hope to mitigate any potential limitations with the data provided by one methodology which can constrain the boundaries of our evaluation. We also triangulate our findings to facilitate a multi-layered understanding gathered from each respective discipline. Broadly speaking, respective strength of each position is the others' respective weakness, thus justifying the rationale for adopting this approach.
The core strategy for evaluation is the surveying technique. Surveys are distributed to young people to glean essential depth of understanding with respect to the feelings and experiences reported by young people. The complexities of bullying may also require alternative approaches closely aligned to qualitative research. Hence focus group interviews, for instance, are set up with several members involved with the programmes, enabling in depth discussions and exploration of a given topic or issue. Beatbullying consistently seeks out appropriate case studies to illustrate the effectiveness of our work. Observations are also conducted to supplement findings.
In terms of analysis, Beatbullying conducts appropriate and robust analysis with the application of various analytical techniques. Quantitative data analysis is employed to generally describe social variables in the context of bullying, extrapolate trends and patterns, and identify the social significance and statistical relevance, amongst other capabilities. On the other hand, qualitative data analysis is undertaken using discourse analysis and semiotics to reveal themes and patterns within the linguistics or discussion. Beatbullying ’s experience and expertise will be exercised to interpret data objectively.
