Anti-Bullying Week is one of the most important weeks in our sector. It is a time when all anti-bullying organisations, charities, businesses, schools and young people get together to raise awareness of bullying as an issue in our society.
In 2010, the theme was 'taking action together' and Beatbullying led The Big March across the homepages of 63 partner organisations to No. 10 Downing Street, asking for key campaign asks around anti-bullying policy. Over 900,000 people supported the award-winning campaign.
In 2009, the central theme was 'cyberbullying'. Our young CyberMentors were heavily involved in local fundraising initiatives and supporting their peers online. We also published our report, 'Virtual Violence: Protecting Children from Cyberbullying' and lots of new resources for teachers. In 2008, we ran a successful campaign in conjunction with Shaun the Sheep. We were inundated with requests for updates about Shaun's appearance in the run up to anti-bullying week - clearly young people just couldn't wait!
November 2007 also saw the launch of our YouTube channel, which has been a great success with nearly 2 million video views to date. It brings comprehensive advice and support to young users all over the world and extends our reach online significantly.
Providing free online learning resources is, of course, a significant part of Beatbullying's involvement in ABW. The other element is that of fundraising. Each year, we sell blue bands into schools and workplaces to raise funds for Beatbullying and in turn, schools make the sale of blue bands a fundraising mechanism for themselves.
