BBSports is a great way to learn about bullying whilst using physical activities. Not everybody is great academically, some young people learn whilst doing activities. The great thing about BBSports is it doesn’t matter if you aren’t great academically or at sports either, you don’t need to be. The whole idea is to take part and work as a team. It’s great for team building and you don’t have to be super fit or athletic.
The workshops are a mixture of discussion, sports drills and brainstorming. We cover all the different types of bullying such as physical, verbal, emotional, mental, racial, homophobic, cyber bullying and both direct and indirect bullying. We talk about how bullying effects young people mentally, physically and emotionally, and how it can have devastating consequences such as loss of education, loss of self-esteem and, in worse-case scenarios, loss of life.
Mixed in with the discussion and brainstorming is the sports element! BBSports uses various sporting drills in a number of different sporting disciplines such as football, rugby, boxing and basketball, so there is something for everyone.
In all programmes you will work together as a team and get to experience what it feels like to be targeted, just as it would feel for a young person being bullied, then as a group we discuss those feelings. Most young people say they felt afraid, alone and very vulnerable.
You also get to experience being a perpetrator and targeting other team members, again we discuss how it felt, most young people say they felt powerful and untouchable. Lastly, you get to be a bystander and to witness seeing somebody else being targeted. We talk about how it would feel if this were happening to you and what we can do to help our peers that may be going
through this.
The workshops are a great way of learning, participating and discussing everything to do with bullying. It’s a team workshop and everybody pulls together to help each other through.
