Sexting

“the act of sending sexually explicit messages or photos electronically, primarily between mobile phones and/or the internet”

In 2009, Beatbullying surveyed over 2,000 young people aged 11-16, to improve our knowledge of cyber bullying. As part of the survey, and to build on the Streetwise programme, we asked young people about their experience of sexual bullying and exposure to inappropriate content on the internet.

  • 38% have received unwanted or nasty sexually explicit messages
  • 70% knew the sender
  • 25% received an offensive sexual image, of which 55% were issued via mobile phone
  • 45% came from a peer, 23% from a current boyfriend/girlfriend and just 2% came from an adult
