Training for parents and families

Bullying can be a highly stressful experience for parents, carers and families as well as for their children, and it is very common for them to feel helpless to deal with it. Our highly skilled Development Officers deliver workshops and presentations to parents and carers. These workshops and presentations focus on identifying the different types of bullying, its effects and consequences, where it happens and why, cyberbullying and e-safety - learn how to keep your child safe online.  As more and more young people are using the internet and social networking sites it is vital that they and their families know how to keep them safe while using the web.

We will cover the following during the training:

  • What is bullying; we will identify and discuss the different types of bullying .  Bullying comes in many different forms including physically, verbally, psychologically and emotionally who does it, why and where, how it affects young people and their families, the consequences of bullying and being a bully.
  • Cyberbullying; we will clearly define what cyberbullying is, where it happens, and what you as a parent can do about it.
  • Myths; we will explore these myths in detail and be able to recognise the behaviour and emotional indictors.
  • Technology and its dangers; we will discuss how often your child is going online, what they are using the internet for, what websites they are frequenting, how often and where you keep the computer at home.
  • Keeping your child safe online; we will generate a safety plan to help you ensure your child stays safe online and to be mindful of what personal information they may be providing. We will explore blocking, reporting and privacy settings on social networking sites and why these are important.
  • Talking to your child/young person about bullying, cyber bullying and how to recognise if this is happening to them, or if they are exhibiting these behaviours and actions on others, and what they can do about it.
  • Helpline access; what help is available for young people experiencing bullying/cyber bullying
  • Approaching the school;  we will give you helpful suggestions on how best to approach your child’s school and raise any concerns you may have with their teacher, and what procedures and strategies they have in place to tackle bullying
  • CyberMentors (seeking online support for bullying and cyber bullying) we will guide you through the CyberMentors website, where your child can get online support from other young people who have been trained to help. The site is a safe online environment where your child can receive mentoring or just talk to other young people about bullying and how they are feeling.
  • Questions and answers; you will have the opportunity to ask our team any questions you have regarding the training, bullying, cyberbullying, what your child may be doing online and the CyberMentors website and any other queries you may have.
