What our volunteers say

Hi I’m Chloe, I’m 22 and was fresh out of University in 2008. During my time at University, I chose to get involved with volunteering through my University. Volunteering, for me, took over. I found out about CyberMentors through my University and I signed up! 4 hours a week? From my own PC? It sounded just the ticket. I got involved because I thought it was a worthy cause and had real direction and purpose. Not only that, but from a practical side, it was virtual, it was flexible and we learnt a new set of skills. The launch happened and the site attracted thousands and thousands of children and young people and my training kicked in straight away. My hope was to fulfil my role the best I could, making sure everyone was safe.
I love being a part of CyberMentors. It’s a fantastic way for me to use my skills and offer that much needed time for young people to talk through their issues. It’s really flexible for me – I do it in my lunchtime at work or sometimes from home and I know that my time, however small it may seem is making a real difference the lives of vulnerable young people all over the UK.
Over a year later, I now find myself working full-time for Beatbullying - volunteering has taken me in quite an unexpected direction!
I wanted to become a CyberMentor because if I had the chance to make just one young person’s day better, I’d take it. Sparing a few minutes to give advice to a young person may seem like a small thing, but it contributes to a much bigger thing – a happy ending.
CyberMentors is a great place for young people to talk to someone about the problems they might be having at school – the website is a virtual portal which provides the young people the opportunity to get some advice when they might have been afraid to do so face to face.
